After a BA in Sociology and a master’s in African history, Cyndi began her professional career making documentaries for WGBH in Boston and two TV stations in Denver. She married Ed Kahn in 1966 and immediately helped Colorado become the first US state to liberalize its abortion laws, thanks to Democrat Rep. Dick Lamm and Republican Sen. John Bermingham’s successful efforts in 1967. That and helping Pat Schroeder become the first Colorado woman elected to Congress in 1972, plus a stint running her local office, got Cyndi hooked on politics as a way to make a difference. She learned she loved starting programs, but not running them. That led to the founding of the Denver Children’s Museum with lots of groups/folks; DPS’ first extended day school at Gilpin in Five Points, with Kay Schomp; Summer Scholars, later called Scholars Unlimited, with CPR’s Jessica Pearson and others; and most recently DDES - the Downtown Denver Expeditionary School. In between, she got a law degree, worked for Legal Aid, clerked for Supreme Court Justice Jean Dubofsky, sat on Colorado’s Water Quality Control Commission, and helped raise 3 terrific kids, all of whom are now middle-aged and parents of even more special grandkids.
